Exodus 2:1-4.
1. And there went a man of the house of Levi, and took for his wife a daughter of Levi. 2. And the woman conceived, and bore a son; and when she saw that he was a handsome child, she hid him three months. 3. And when she could not longer hide him, she took for him an ark made of reeds, and daubed it with slime and with pitch, and put the child in it; and she laid it in the rushes by the river’s brink. 4. And his sister stood far away, to see what would be done to him.

5. And the daughter of Pharaoh (Batya) came down to wash herself at the river; and her maidens walked along by the river’s side; and when she saw the ark among the reeds, she sent her maid to fetch it. 6. And when she had opened it, she saw the child; and, behold, the baby wept. And she had compassion on him, and said, This is one of the Hebrews’ children. 7. Then said his sister to Pharaoh’s daughter, Shall I go and call for you a nurse of the Hebrew women, that she may nurse the child for you? 8. And Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, Go. And the girl went and called the child’s mother. 9. And Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, Take this child away, and nurse it for me, and I will give you your wages. And the woman took the child, and nursed it.

11. And it came to pass in those days, when Moses was grown, that he went out to his brothers, and looked on their burdens; and he spied an Egyptian beating a Hebrew, one of his brothers. 12. And he looked this way and that way, and when he saw that there was no man, he slew the Egyptian, and hid him in the sand.

4 The Bush

1. And Moses kept the flock of Jethro his father-in-law, the priest of Midian; and he led the flock far away into the desert, and came to the mountain of God, to Horeb. 2. And the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush; and he looked, and, behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed. 3. And Moses said, I will now turn aside, and see this great sight, why the bush is not burnt. 4. And when the Lord saw that he turned aside to see, God called to him out of the midst of the bush, and said, Moses, Moses. And he said, Here am I. 5. And he said, Do not come any closer; take off your shoes from your feet, for the place on which you stand is holy ground.

20. And Moses took his wife and his sons, and set them upon an ass, and he returned to the land of Egypt; and Moses took the rod of God in his hand. 21. And the Lord said to Moses, When you go to return to Egypt, see that you do all those wonders before Pharaoh, which I have put in your hand; but I will harden his heart, so that he shall not let the people go. 22. And you shall say to Pharaoh, Thus said the Lord, Israel is my son, my firstborn; 23. And I say to you, Let my son go, that he may serve me; and if you refuse to let him go, behold, I will slay your son, your firstborn. 24. And it came to pass by the way in the inn, that the Lord met him, and sought to kill him. 25. Then Zipporah took a sharp stone, and cut off the foreskin of her son, and threw it at his feet, and said, Surely a bridegroom of blood are you to me. 26. So he let him go; then she said, A bridegroom of blood you are, because of the circumcision.

6 Pharoah

1. And afterward Moses and Aaron went in, and told Pharaoh, Thus said the Lord God of Israel, Let my people go, that they may hold a feast for me in the wilderness. 2. And Pharaoh said, Who is the Lord, that I should obey his voice to let Israel go? I know not the Lord, nor will I let Israel go. 3. And they said, The God of the Hebrews has met with us; let us go, we pray you, three days’ journey into the desert, and sacrifice to the Lord our God; lest he fall upon us with pestilence, or with the sword. 4 And the king of Egypt said to them, Why do you, Moses and Aaron, take the people from their works? Go you to your burdens. 5. And Pharaoh said, Behold, the people of the land now are many, and you make them rest from their burdens.
